About
I'm Luciana Inara. My career experiences cover disaster and humanitarian crisis, international politics, research, and consulting, and documentary film. I studied theatre and languages as an undergraduate. I received my MA in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

I'm a trans woman. I'm uncomfortable with the gender binary. I'm queer. I'm a radical leftist, an anarchist, but I haven't always been.

I grew up surrounded by extreme conservatism and white supremacy and was taught these concepts in school, church, and in my community. While I have never ascribed to these values, it took work to seek escape from the ideologies I'd been surrounded by while growing up and to deprogram. I still do my best to do the work. This is reflected in my writing.

While my politics have shifted increasingly leftward during the course of my life and career, much of my work has consisted of things like:

  • Producing/Directing a feature-length documentary about domestic and international politics of Kosovo
  • Commissioned to direct a short film as a gift from the state of Iowa as a gift to President Xi Jinping of China
  • Collecting radiological data, in person, in the immediate wake of the Fukushima Daiichi meltdown while it was still in critical status
  • Human Remains retrieval in the Philippines after Typhoon Yolanda/Hayan
  • GIS video-mapping of multiple disaster areas
  • Instructing World Food Programme workers how to use drones for humanitarian purposes in Madagascar
  • Placing a series of portable cell-phone towers across Puerto Rico and St. John, USVI in the wake of hurricanes Irma & Maria
  • Sea rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Libya
  • Documentation of torture by Taliban for a case to be brought to the International Criminal Court and Case Management for Afghan Evacuation and Resettlement for those targeted by Taliban

In my newsletter and website, and inevitably over coffee with friends, I discuss topics of power, queerness, and revolution in relatable ways… sort of. I share critical resources and insight when relevant, resources for queer and trans community and for anyone who is feeling the tempo of the zeitgeist and doesn't know what to do with this energy. I do these things while being as authentic as I can. Open and at times probably a bit unhinged. I'm loud, direct, and irreverent.

I write for people who are feeling discomfort with the status quo and yearn for visions of radical change. I also write for those who appreciate the relief of irreverence among The Horrors we're all facing today. Disrespect for authority. Leftist politics. Activism. Maybe tentacles (definitely tentacles).

Take my hand, let's be scandalous together.
